A very detailed bronze medallion commemorating
the USS Brumby
The USS Brumby was a Garcia Class Vessel, from
our
"COLD WAR ERA"
built by Avondale Industries, Avondale, LA,
located on the
Mississippi River, 12 miles upstream of New
Orleans, just above
the Huey P. Long Bridge.
This ship building yard is still in operation
today under the management of
Northrop Grumman, Avondale, with more that
6000 employees, and the capability
of building and launching ships up to 100,000
tons.
The keel of the Brumby was laid on April 1st,
1963, and launched on
the Mississippi, Port of New Orleans, June
6th, 1964.
Commissioned by the U.S. Navy, August 5th,
1965
OUR COMMANDER & CHIEF AT THE TIME THE KEEL
WAS LAID WAS
"JOHN F KENNEDY"
who was assassinated in Dallas, TX, November
22nd, 1963,
just six months prior to the Brumby's launching.
She was 3,560 tons fully loaded, 414' long
x 44' wide.
her draught was 14 feet from the keel and
had a 24' sonar dome.
Driven by two Foster-Wheeler boilers, and
one
Westinghouse geared turbine @ 35,000 shp with
one shaft.
Cruise speed 27 knots, range 4,000 miles @
20 knots
running on one boiler.
Weapons aboard were two 5" 38 caliper
guns and MK torpedoes.
On March 31st, 1989 she was decommissioned
and leased to
the country of Pakistan.
Pakistan returned the vessel at the close
of the lease
November 14th, 1993.
The ship was then sold and broken up for scrap
September 9th, 1994.
Originally we had four of the medallions above
for sale, in which
three, were sold to Brumby Shipmates.
We had many inquiries from shipmates, and
all of them had
only good things to say, as well as fond memories
of the ship.
We decided to retain the last one and memorialize
on this site
for those shipmates, as well as any other
interested parties, who may
wish to view it, with the basic history of
the ship.
(The last medallion has also recently been
sold to another shipmate)
Any shipmate who wishes to add any additional
information on the Brumby
can do so by sending an e-mail to the link
below.

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS E-MAILED TO US
JANUARY 7TH, 2005 FROM
A COMMANDER OF THE USS BRUMBY
I Commanded the USS Brumby 1982-1984 during some very interesting
times
in her life. The ship made several deployments during that time
including
NGFS off Beiruit, SpecOps in the Agean Sea and acted as a
"RED RAIDER"
in at sea war games, much to the terror of the blue guys!
We were the
"BATSHIP"
and flew the batman flag as well as had a bat painted over the helo
hanger door!
High spirited crew, interesting operations, and good in-ship communications,
kept that crew happy and well qualified.
We returned from deployment with all officers SWO qualified and
all CPO ESWS qualified.
MIKE WEST, CAPT USN(ret),WANDO, SC
Many thanks to Captain West for his input and information!!!
