PHILADELPHIA
The McAllister family's businesses & partnerships
began with
John McAllister SR. 1755-1830
who sold whips & canes in Philadelphia
in the 1780's. The following decade
he added a line of spectacles & in the
ensuing decades, lens making became the family
specialty, in which the McAllister name became
nationally known for optics, medical
equipment, mathematical instruments &
commercial photography.
Two of his sons, William Young McAllister(1812-1896)
& Thomas Hamilton
McAllister(1824-1898), became opticians &
formed a partnership,
McAllister & Brothers, a firm that operated
in Philadelphia from
1853 to 1865.
This is a very historic & quite fragile
original telescope, made sometime
during the brothers partnership in the mid
19th century.
It is still in quite good condition, however
its requires a degree of care when
sliding the drawers, as well as not placing
any pressure on the lens end due to its
fine threads that can be pulled off easily,
the unit is fully intact however & will not
separate at the lens end without direct pressure.
30" Long Extended x 1 3/4" diameter
