The USS BON HOMME RICHARD CV-31
was the second vessel to be so named, the ship
was built in New York
at a cost of 60,000,000 with 2,700,000 man
hours of work.
She was 870 feet long, could carry approx.
80 planes, with
a weight of more than a half million pounds,
propelled by
150,000 horsepower.
Her sponsor was Mrs J.S. McCain, wife of the
Vice Admiral
J.S. McCain, one of the top ranking air officers
of the World War II era.
THE FIRST VESSEL TO POSSESS THE SHIPS NAME
WAS BUILT BY THE EAST INDIA COMPANY IN 1779,
AND ORIGINAL NAMED THE
"DUC DE DURAS"
IT WAS PASSED ON TO THE AMERICAN SERVICE AND
PLACED
UNDER THE COMMAND OF
"JOHN PAUL JONES"
WHO NAMED HER BON HOMME RICHARD TO
HONOR
"BENJAMIN FRANKLIN"
THIS WAS THE VESSEL THAT ENGAGED IN BATTLE
WITH
THE BRITISH SHIP HMS SERAPIS ON SEPTEMBER
23RD, 1979.
THE SERAPIS WAS CAPTURED, HOWEVER THE RICHARD
CAUGHT FIRE & WHEN CALLED UPON TO SURRENDER
EARLY
IN THE BATTLE JONES MADE HIS FAMOUS STATEMENT:
"I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT"
ALTHOUGH THE SERAPIS WAS CAPTURED , THE
BON HOMME RICHARD WAS ALSO LOST.
