I
created this site using my own personal
collection
of nautical antiques, and collectibles which I began
back in
the early 1970's,when I lived on Long Island's
"GREAT
SOUTH BAY"
in the
town of West Islip, New York.
The inspiration
for this site came from seeing the
wonderful
and natural view, of bay and ocean,
right from
my own backyard.
The beautiful
fireball sunrise, and the sailors moon,
breaking
the horizon at night.
The wonderful
starlit nights, combined with lights
of the
Robert Moses Causeway, blended with
the
lights of
"FIRE ISLAND"
gleaming
like a diamond necklace across the bay at night.
The infamous
"OBI"
which was
directly across from my home on the bay.
The sounds
of ducks, gulls and other wildlife, gently
touching
the sole.
The gun
shot firing to start the sailboat races,
from the
Babylon Yacht Club, and the "NOON" whistle
from the
same town, combined with
the genuine
and relaxed state of the people in the area.
The professional
clammers, on their Garvey's,
scattered
across the bay
working
tongs to make their family livings.
And we should
not forget about how the bay used
to freeze
over in winter & how residents
walked,
skated, & drove small vehicles onto the ice, some
stopping
to cut holes, to collect shellfish
to be sold
at the the most premium prices.
(the last
complete freeze was in the early 70's)
And of course,
the beauty and awesome power of ocean and bay.
And on
occasion, a short lived, Titanic love affair.
All of us,
at one time or another, try to get away, on a weekend, or
just about
whenever we can, from the hustle and bustle of
the city,
and our work week, and venture to places like the one
described
above, to relax, contemplate life,
and uplift
the human spirit.
Today I
no longer live in such wonderful scenic surroundings,
however
my collection, which is spread throughout my home,
is a reminder
of such times, and the items
themselves
bring me great
joy.
We are not
a huge sales company, my goal was to create a
business
that is fun to operate, even if it does require a
large degree
of work, and money to create.
Its what
I call a
"LABOR
OF LOVE"
Every item
on this site is fully enjoyed
by
me, until its becomes yours,
and I will
try my best to place the most accurate information
that I
can on each item, and continue to extend as many
historical
items and information as possible in the
"SHIP'S
GRAVEYARD MUSEUM"
